This is a Class A marine radio. Only large vessels are required to have Class A radios on board, and I suspect many people who buy this model never use any of the clever features - they buy them for the big chunky design, clear display and single button access to the common features.

 

Small vessels and leisure users rarely need to have the need to rebroadcast Mayday messages, or build up comprehensive lists of other radio users they can call silently with one button.

 

What the buyers get is a reliable, solid simple to use radio with a long mic cable! Fiddle with the gadgets maybe later. It will operate on a single VHF antenna but does have the facility for two.

The built in small GPS receiver uses a supplied small antenna that can be stuck to a window with a clear view of the sky - and then your position will be displayed on the screen and in an emergency, the Coastguard and other vessels will know who you are, where you are and what the problem is with a push of the red emergency button.

 

OFCOM will provide MMSI numbers included with the current free marine licence - so in an emergency, your details can be provided to the emergency services.
