For some reason Icom marketed this radio as a business radio when it was current, which is a great shame because it's an excellent ham radio with direct frequency entry  from the keypad and access to all the features that can be set and then stored in memory. There are simple up/down buttons too so going up and down  the band is simple. We've been using them on marine band where customers just want a simple radio that works on a single channel (like in the marinas) or with just  a small number to choose from for simplicity (or to stop people accidentally transmitting in the wrong place) The few we have we thought we'd sell in the 'right' place - so amateurs can take advantage of a very small but solid, high power radio for 2m, but also be able to use any frequency 136-174Mhz band.

 

They also have a standard BNC antenna connector - Icom have used this connector since the 70s, and it makes reliable and sturdy connection  to external antennas very simple - not as fragile as using SMA adaptors which are never strong enough.

The IC-V85 is a powerful 7W VHF handheld transceiver, which is ideal for those customers who are looking for a compact and rugged radio for light commercial use. The IC-V85 is water resistant making it great for practical outdoor usage.

 

Full 7W of output power

With the supplied battery pack, BP-227, 7W of high power operation is possible. The IC-V85 provides stable output power and a practical 7 hours of operating time. For longer operating times, 4W or 0.5W of reduced output power settings are selectable.

 

 

External DC Power Jack

An external DC power jack allows for operation with an external DC power supply (11.7–15.9V DC). When used with the CP-19R, simultaneous operation during charging is possible.

 

Compact Body

The IC-V85 is a compact unit with a height of only 110mm. The IC-V85 is also build sturdy to take knocks and bangs in many areas of use.

 

Water Resistant, Equivalent To IPX4

The water resistant construction provides reliable operation in wet conditions, so it is safe to take this radio outdoors in any season.

 

Alphanumeric Display The large, easy-to-see display clearly shows channel name, operating frequency, memory number and so on. An signal-meter icon shows the signal strength of the receiving frequency and output power level while transmitting.

 

A Total of 107 Memory Channels

The IC-V85 has a total of 107 memory channels, including 100 regular channels, 6 scan edges and 1 call channel. The channel name is programmable with 5 characters for easy recognition.

 

Dynamic Memory Scan (DMS) System

The Dynamic Memory Scan (DMS) system divides regular memory channels into 10 groups, A to J, and provides easy channel selection. DMS allows you to scan all the selected banks you want to scan by simply adding/deleting bank links with Icom’s exclusive Bank Link system.

 

CTCSS & DTCS Tone Squelch

The CTCSS and DTCS tones are built-in for quiet stand-by and repeater access. Pocket beep and tone scan are also possible. The tone scan allows the operator to detect the subaudible tone that is used for repeater access.

 

DTMF & Pager Operation

The IC-V85 has 16 DTMF memory channels for remote controlling a repeater, telephone interconnect etc. Each DTMF memory channel stores up to a 24-digit code. The optional DTMF decoder unit, UT-108 provides pager and code squelch functions.
